Followers of Jesus Differ by Generations in Their Expressions of Faith

Data from Barna’s Discipleship in Community study highlights significant generational differences in how Christians feel about following Jesus and how they express and experience their faith.

Gen Z (people born between 1997 and 2012; in 2025, they are between the ages of 13 and 28) are the least likely age group of churchgoers to say their relationship with Jesus brings them joy and satisfaction (56%). They are also least likely to feel Jesus speaks to them in a way that’s relevant to their life (50%).

Older churchgoers share a strong desire for “others to see Jesus reflected in their words and actions” (61% and 60% for Boomers [1955 – 1964; 61 – 70 years old] and Gen X [1965 – 1980; 45 – 60 years old] respectively).

Younger churchgoers are focused on the idea of “finding a way to follow Jesus in a way that connects to the broader culture they live in.”
