“In summary,” he writes, “the Wayne church shooting incident ended with the intended victims unharmed, aside from one injured security guard, thanks to the brave and prompt reaction of church members. The suspect was armed for a massacre, but he was stopped before he could reach the 150 men, women, and children inside. Police and community leaders have hailed this outcome as ‘the best possible outcome in a worst-case scenario,’ while also acknowledging the trauma it inflicted. The incident is now prompting other communities to examine their own security plans, and investigators continue working to understand what led to the suspect’s deadly actions. Wayne’s CrossPointe Community Church, though scarred by the event, has emerged as an example of preparedness and courage under fire, illustrating both the challenges and the hope in Church active shooter prevention going forward.”

Also, the following Gun Owners Radio video is an interview with Jay Trombley, a CrossPointe Community Church volunteer security team member describing the incident, and Jeff Pitt, the firearms trainer who prepared the church’s security team.
In viewing the first portion of the interview (admitting that he lacks the patience to sit through its entire hour-and-a-half length), retired firearms and self-defense trainer Stephen Wenger, creator of the Defensive Use of Firearms website, says, “Around 14:20 [on the video], [the security volunteer] states that he initially approached the partly disabled attacker to a distance of about four feet, then retreated back down the corridor before returning to engage him….Despite all his training, the [security volunteer] in the interview may not have really been prepared mentally to accept that he was actually facing a scenario for which he had trained. Perhaps houses of worship that recognize the need for security teams should emphasize [to their members] that the commandment is not “thou shall not kill” but “thou shall not murder.”
