Understand the Times and Know What to Do

The country’s first king, Saul, rallied his fighting coalition to ward off the nation’s enemies. However, his reign began to end when he disobeyed God, and the young David became the LORD‘s anointed.

God selected the shepherd-poet to become a warrior of national renown, beginning with defending Israel by dispatching the Philistine Goliath with slingshot precision and beheading him. David describes his expertise with defensive weapons in 2 Samuel 22:35, which states, “He trains my hands for battle, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze” and is repeated in Psalm 18:34. And he reiterates it in Psalm 144:1, “Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.”

Upon King Saul’s death, thousands and even tens of thousands of warriors from each of Israel’s tribes swore their allegiance to David.

However, one small tribe stands out from the rest for being the only one numbering soldiers in the mere hundreds but giving them elite status: 200 “from Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do” (1 Chronicles 12:32). These commandos might have been comparable to today’s modern special operations forces, such as Navy SEALs, Delta Force, Rangers, and Green Berets, who accomplish their strategic missions in small-unit configurations.

Let that moniker of “understand the times and know what to do” describe all self-defenders and church security team members: intentionally discerning the dangerous times in which we engage our lives every day, always paying attention and being situationally aware of threats—both physical and spiritual—to our bodies and souls and those we protect, and diligently training to know the appropriate action to take when necessary to achieve a successful outcome.
