US Dept. of Justice Now Protecting the Second Amendment As a Civil Right
Finally, a US government administration has committed itself to no longer treating the Second Amendment as a second-class civil right.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has created a dedicated Second Amendment Rights Section inside the Civil Rights Division (CRD). As the firearm industry’s NSSF says, “This marks a historic course correction in federal policy and highlights the Trump Administration’s continued effort to assess ongoing infringements on Second Amendment rights….[F]or the first time, the Civil Rights Division is directed to treat the Second Amendment as what it is: a civil right deserving active protection.”

The mission of the 2nd Amendment Section is to ensure that law-abiding American citizens may responsibly possess, carry, and use firearms.

The CRD is led by US Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon (@AAGDhillon) who says, “Unnecessary restrictions on lawful firearms endanger law-abiding citizens, and this Civil Rights Division is challenging them one by one.”

Through its Second Amendment Rights Section, the CRD will focus specifically on enforcing Second Amendment rights by:
- investigating alleged patterns or practices of Second Amendment infringement by law enforcement
- filing statements of interest when cases in litigation affect the interests of the United State
- utilizing affirmative legal action and coordinating amicus filings to achieve tangible results for law-abiding American citizens
- investigating state and local laws or policies that improperly limit the right to keep and bear arms
- ensuring constitutional gun ownership protections.

On its website, it says, “The 2nd, 4th, and 14th Amendments, the Police Pattern or Practice Act, and EO 14206 “Protecting Second Amendment Rights” secure the natural firearm rights of law-abiding American citizens and ensure that such rights to keep and bear arms will not be infringed.”

“The 2nd Amendment Section will work diligently to investigate law enforcement agencies that engage in a pattern or practice of infringing on law-abiding citizens’ 2nd Amendment rights, as well as be proactive in searching for litigation opportunities to secure such rights.

“The 2nd Amendment Section will also seek opportunities to advance a broad interpretation of the 2nd Amendment via statements of interest, motions to intervene, amicus briefs, and original lawsuits where applicable on behalf of Americans across the country.
