Sentinel Geese Behavior, Church Security, Self-Defense, Situational Awareness, the 2nd Amendment, and Hon. Roger T. Benitez (Ret.)

The concept of a watchman standing guard—situationally aware and providing protection over a group of people—is biblical and well known. It’s the foundation on which church security teams are built.

The same is true in nature. Canada geese naturally exhibit sentinel behavior. Flocks and pairs that land on the ground to forage take turns watching for predators while others eat. One stands alert with its head up or scans while the others graze, then they switch roles.

During the spring breeding season, the dynamic changes slightly. The female (goose) incubates the eggs, while the male (gander) remains on constant guard nearby or right alongside her, though he still gets opportunities to feed when she takes brief breaks.

If protecting a family with young goslings, both parents stay alert, but the male is typically more aggressive and vigilant about scanning for threats while the family forages.

Many social grazing animals use this natural sentinel system where designated individuals stand guard or remain vigilant while their companions eat. This behavior is common among zebras, horses, meerkats, and ducks.

The keynote speaker at the Second Amendment Foundation 41st annual 2026 Gun Rights Policy Conference (GRPC) Sept. 25-27, 2026, in Dallas, Texas, was the Honorable Roger T. Benitez (Ret.), who served as a United States District Judge for the Southern District of California from 2004 until his retirement in April 2026.

Judge Benitez earned national recognition as one of the most consequential judicial defenders of the Second Amendment. Correctly applying the US Supreme Court’s decisions in recent years, he issued clear, logical, pragmatic, and understandable rulings striking down California’s ban on so-called “large”-capacity magazines (Duncan v. Bonta), another ban on so-called “assault weapons” (Miller v. Bonta), and the state’s error-prone ammunition background check (Rhode v. Bonta 2020 and 2024).

In his GRPC keynote address, Judge Benitez used ducks to illustrate natural law, the universal moral principles and rights that form important philosophical and legal order. He said, “Every species on Earth has the right, if not the obligation, to defend itself, its territory, and its partner. And if a cute little duck will fight other ducks in order to protect his territory, his mate, why don’t we? Of course we do.” Watch his speech below. Or watch it on YouTube here.

A Cuban-born immigrant, Judge Benitez’s principled rulings on the Second Amendment continue to shape the national debate over the right to keep and bear arms as the cases continue on appeal in the Ninth Circuit and the Supreme Court.

Here are quotes by Judge Benitez from his keynote speech:

“Your right to protect yourself, to protect your family, to protect your property: it’s a civil right. It’s a right that deserves just as much protection as the right to practice your religion, to be able to speak freely, to have the press, to assemble.”

“When you talk about guns, a lot of people just immediately turn off. They don’t want to listen to you. They think you’re a zealot….I’m not gun friendly. I’ve been accused of being gun friendly….Here’s what I am friendly for: I’m freedom friendly. I’m rights friendly. I believe that those rights that the founders gave to this wonderful great country—if you know my history, you know how much I love and appreciate this country—those rights are worth fighting for. They’re worth taking the slings and arrows that I have taken. Believe me, it’s worth it. It’s absolutely worth it.”

“I encourage you anytime that you talk about gun rights, make sure that you shift the conversation over and remind people that you’re talking about civil rights. That’s what the Constitution is about. That’s what the Bill of Rights is about. And if we make the Rill of Rights or if we make our rights dependent upon the people in government at the time, if we do that then we become a government of men, and not a government of laws. This world, this country was founded on the idea that we are a country of laws.”
